His parents taught him: "Thou shalt love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."

The family moved to Springfield, Ohio and Wilburn entered kindergarten. His elementary school years were spent in Toledo, Ohio. Wilburn graduated from Barringer High School in Newark, NJ as the Salutatorian, June 1959. Wilburn took his talents to Rutgers University where he excelled in Track and Field as a World Class hurdler, and member of the Physics Club. Tau Delta Phi was his Fraternity Affiliation. Wilburn received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology in June, 1963.

On June 27, 1964, he married the love of his life, the late Grace Evelyn Jones Sells. This union created two beautiful daughters, Kristie and Patricia. He treasured family life surrounded by "his girls" and the birth of his granddaughter, Mattea put icing on the cake.

Wilburn entered Army Training Camp at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in May of 1966. He completed Officer's Training from Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. He ended his military career as a First Lieutenant.

Returning home, Wilburn held several positions with Proctor & Gamble retiring as a Vice President, and at one point becoming the most senior African-American within the organization.

Preceding him in death his beloved wife Grace, Parents Rev. and Mrs. H.C. Sells, Sister Marguerite Anderson, and Brothers Halloway Charles and Bertram Lane.
