Obituary

Margaret ("Peg") Jean Read (née Westbrook) formerly of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and most recently of East Windsor, New Jersey, died surrounded by family on September 20, 2015 at age 91. She leaves her six children: Priscilla, Elizabeth, James ("Jamie"), Amanda, Christopher, and John ("Tad"); five grandchildren: Hannah, Rebeccah, Spenser, Slater, and Anna Rose; and three great-grandchildren: Amara, Kieran, and Grace.

Born in Paragould, Arkansas, Peg is remembered for the gracious Southern charm that stayed with her long after she lost her accent, the story-telling gifts that reminded everyone of her beloved Faulkner in whose Mississippi she spent some of her childhood, the sense of humor that never faltered, her stoicism in the face of medical challenges, and the keen interest in others that made her such a sympathetic conversationalist. She attended the University of Washington in St. Louis where she met James Allan Read, her husband of nearly 70 years. At the end of World War II, the couple spent two years in Livorno, Italy with the U.S. Army before settling in Detroit and then Bloomfield Hills, where Peg dedicated her energy and keen intelligence to raising their children.

A remarkable memory undergirded her love of literature and films, and she was an ardent supporter of civil rights who joined marches, worked with Open Housing, and instilled in her offspring a sense of social responsibility. Loving devotion to family is her most lasting legacy.

A memorial service will begin at 3:00PM on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Trinity Church, 33 Mercer Street, Princeton, NJ 08540
