Obituary

Joan Kellett, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt, was born Joan Rita Weiselberg on April 15, 1937, proudly sharing her tax-day birthday with her own mother and grandmother.  She was married to Jerry Weir and later to Frank Kellett, who predeceased her.

Joan's professional and volunteer career spanned decades, and always involved helping others and a love of animals and quilting. After attending University of Illinois and graduating from Hunter College in New York, Joan began a career as a speech therapist at Mount Sinai hospital. She took time away from her career to raise a family, but later started a second career as the disaster care coordinator for the National Burn Victim Foundation. In this capacity she ran complex disaster drills and travelled the state of New Jersey teaching about burn prevention. She also volunteered extensively, serving on the West Orange First Aid Squad for decades as well as being an EMT and CPR instructor and instructor trainer.

In the late 1980s, Joan took up quilting, and soon after moving from Livingston NJ to Endwell NY she joined the Common Threads Quilters Guild, where she became an active longtime member. Joan enjoyed designing and creating beautiful intricate quilts for all of her loved ones, teaching quilting to local residents, and even at times selling quilts - her favorite being baby quilts for expecting parents. For many years, she also made special tuxedo baby bibs for Equity Fights AIDS. Her truly countless quilts and many thousands of stitches are a cherished legacy that will live on forever as a reminder of her love, her creativity, and a talent that she developed and cultivated into a lifelong passion.

Joan also had a love of dogs throughout her lifetime, and she combined her desire to help others with her love of dogs by training two of her beloved pets to be certified therapy dogs and taking them to visit local nursing homes in Broome County, New York.

Joan moved back to New Jersey in 2021, during the COVID pandemic, and is survived by her daughter, Lori, son-in-law Brig, and granddaughters Shoshi and Sarah Mae, as well as her sister, Marilyn, and niece and nephew, Linda and Bob.

Please consider making a donation in Joan's honor to The Institute of Humane Education or the Alzheimers Association.

Graveside services will be held in Vestal Hills Memorial Park, Vestal, NY once confirmed.
