Helen R.

🌿 In Loving Memory of Helen R. Cannon
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey  Resident of HoneyStone Farm, Hopewell Township
Helen R. Cannon, a fiercely independent soul and devoted steward of nature, passed away peacefully under hospice care, surrounded by the attentive staff and caregivers of Springpoint at Home and Brandywine Assisted Living, where she had resided in her final years. She was 99, and leaves behind a legacy of conservation, wildlife preservation, and quiet strength.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Helen spent her early years immersed in the beauty of her mother's flower garden and the companionship of cherished cats and dogs, and school friends. She inherited her father's deep love for animals, a passion that guided her throughout her life.
Helen attended Miss Fine's Finishing School in Princeton, then earned an associate's degree from what is now George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Her early career in the capital included memorable encounters with political leaders and ambassadors -stories she shared with wit and wonder.
Her most treasured chapter was her time living on Sixth Avenue in New York City, where she worked as a Secretary in advertising, played tennis at her favorite club, skated at the ice rink, and reveled in a rich social life. She became a devoted supporter of the Bronx Zoo, sharing its magic with anyone who would listen.
When her mother fell ill, Helen returned to HoneyStone Farm in Hopewell Township, where she lovingly cared for her parents. Though she never married or had children, her life was full—anchored by her daily New York Times, her beloved history and biography books, and her tireless support for conservation organizations including the World Wildlife Federation, the New Jersey Watershed, and the New Jersey Conservation Society.
Locals in Pennington fondly recall Helen driving her little red convertible, affectionately named Blush, as she made her rounds to favorite local businesses she loyally supported. Though private and reserved, Helen would gladly share stories of her animals, her parents, and the land she loved.
She was the perfect blend of her mother's refined social grace and her father's earthy warmth. Her life was a quiet testament to loyalty, intellect, and deep care for the natural world.
Helen was pre-deceased by her father, John Williams Cannon in 1972, from Kentucky and her mother, Helen Carlisle Robinson Cannon in 1977, from Providence, Rhode Island. Helen had no immediate surviving relatives, but she will be dearly missed by her friends- Richard Gorda and Annette Murphy, her caregivers, and advocates like Wendy Schutzer, who had the privilege of knowing her in her final years.
A private service was held on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island, where Helen was laid to rest beside her beloved parents.
