Obituary

Hector "Tito" Ignacio Mata was born on Sunday, June 11, 1978 in Los Angeles, California. As a young child, Hector moved with his family to Michoacan, Mexico where he developed his deep appreciation for his Mexican heritage, and later grew up in Princeton, NJ. He was known and loved for his light-hearted nature, infectious laugh, and unwavering generosity. Hector truly loved nature and people, it pained him to see others suffer or be treated unjustly. He had a passion for traveling that ignited his spirit and enriched his life, while continuing to cherish his cultural roots. Despite facing numerous challenges, he remained a survivor, finding strength in every trial and triumph and was often heard saying "sí se puede!" (yes, it can be done!) when times were tough. His mother remembers this was an intrinsic part of his personality from his early years: at the age of two Hector was involved in a car accident and, although he suffered numerous broken bones that required some six months to heal, Hector never stopped smiling and his positive attitude was unblemished.

Although he never married nor had children of his own, he cherished his nieces and nephews and was lovingly referred to as "Tio Tito."

Hector will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who were touched by his kindness, humor, and unwavering determination. He leaves behind his mother Elena Mata and her husband Lacon Barley; sisters Sally (Scott) Canady, Diane (Michael) Riley and Paloma Mata; brother Jorge (Jackie) Mata; nieces Sara and Sofia Canady; and nephews Ethan and Seth Riley, and Nicolas and Antonio Mata.

Hector's light was dimmed too soon. We are deeply pained by his loss. The many warm memories and the indelible mark he left on the lives of others bring us comfort.
