Obituary

Daniel Allyn Docheff

March 15, 1949 - February 4, 2025

Dan Docheff, 75, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at home, in his favorite spot to read, surrounded by his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Ileana, the love of his life; his legacy of five children and six grandchildren; and his mother, Shirley, and brother, Tim. He was preceded by his father, Dill, and brother, Dennis.

Born March 15, 1949 and raised in Los Angeles, California, Dan was a bright student who was Valedictorian of his class, loved playing sports, and was captivated by the new freedom of rock music. After graduating from Stanford University, he made his way across the country to the east coast to complete an MBA at Cornell University, where he began building his family.

Early career pursuits included working as a paperboy, summer steelworker, and casino cage cashier, all of which built the character and work ethic for an illustrious career in international banking, which allowed him to make a good living, live abroad, and keep the home fires burning. While he found a niche in banking, Dan led a parallel life exploring the creative pursuits that brought him immense joy. He moonlighted as an armchair film critic and occasional novelist, stealing away to NYC's independent theaters, and rising with the sun to complete his requisite hour of reading or writing before the day got going.

His true passion lay in life's simple pleasures — sitting under the sun with his drink, book, and the Sunday crossword, his favorite songs on shuffle and his family spilling in and out. Though he was perfectly content staying put in his spot under the sun, he covered a lot of ground as an insatiable traveler — first road tripping and eating on the cheap as a college student, and later adventuring with his faithful travel companions, 'Los Intrépidos', with whom he saw the world, likely got into trouble, and laughed through memory after memory.

Anyone who met Dan liked him right away. He had a strong sense of morality, an open mind, a desire to do good in the world, and an inward spirit of rebellion that he encouraged in his kids. A textbook optimist, nothing could prevent him from experiencing joy every day. He loved his family and friends fiercely, without judgment, and never missed an opportunity to make sure they knew so. Dan knew how to live and did it well.

Friends and loved ones are invited to join his family to honor his memory and celebrate his legacy on Thursday, February 13, from 4-7pm at Congregation Kehilat Shalom in Belle Mead, NJ, with a tribute service beginning at 6pm.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Dan by taking a moment to hug your children, grandchildren, and loved ones— or simply paus e to appreciate a sunset, his favorite time of day.
