Obituary

Calogero Mauro, 96, of Princeton, NJ passed away on September 19, 2025. Calogero was born on March 15, 1929 in Acquaviva, Sicily, Italy. He immigrated to the United States in 1954, settling in Princeton where he built a life grounded in hard work, integrity, and love for his family.

Before coming to America, Calogero served in the Italian military, where he also performed in a band for his fellow servicemen. After arriving in the United States, Calogero worked tirelessly to build his own home, often devoting nights and weekends to the project while working full-time as a mason. A skilled craftsman, Calogero was known for his meticulous work and methodical approach to every project he undertook. Some of his most notable projects can still be seen today on the campus of Princeton University and at Jasna Polana, a private country club in Princeton.

Beyond his work, Calogero embraced life's simple joys. In his younger years, he loved to dance and play the accordion. He cherished home-cooked meals prepared by his devoted wife, card games, a good cup of espresso, and tending to his fig trees. Above all, his heart was most full when seated at the head of the dining room table surrounded by his grandchildren. A lifelong gardener, Calogero planted his final garden at the age of 92.

Son of the late Carmelo and Giuseppina Mauro, Calogero is predeceased by his brothers, Salvatore, Domenico, Nicolo and Giuseppe Mauro, and his sisters, Theresa Solazzo, Carmela Orlando and Giuseppina Ingrao and his son-in-law Robert MacNiven.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Antonietta (Antonina) Mauro; his daughters, Josephine Molnar and Rose Marie MacNiven (Fiance Larry LeClaire); sons Charles Mauro (wife Sandra); and Carmelo Mauro (wife Maria). Eight grandchildren; Brian MacNiven, Kelly MacNiven-Jenkins (husband Trevor), Michael Molnar, Brandyn Mauro (wife Anna), Giovanni Mauro, Stephenie Mauro, Julia Mauro, and Isabella Mauro; and great-grandson Reid Robert Jenkins; sisters-in-law Rosetta Mauro and Maria Caracausi (husband Tommaso), brothers-in-law Pino Urso (wife Maria Catana Urso) and Stefano Urso (wife Rosuccia Urso) and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, September 24th from 9:30am to 11:30am, followed by a service at the Kimble Funeral Home, 1 Hamilton Ave., Princeton, NJ.  Calogero will be entombed at Greenwood Cemetery, 1800 Hamilton Ave., Hamilton Township, NJ.
