Obituary

Arthur Edward Robinson, Jr. died peacefully on the morning of August 17, 2016 at home with family nearby. Art was born in Houlton, ME, the first child of Arthur E. Robinson, Sr. and Edith Fitts Robinson.

As a teenager, his family moved to Ridgewood, NJ. He was a 1953 graduate of Ridgewood High School and 1957 graduate of Rutgers University, earning a Bachelor's in Business. While in college, "Big Art" was an All-American lacrosse player and the captain of the Rutgers football team. He also began dating Nancy Farrell, the Military Ball Queen and a model for many college-related publications, and they married in July 1958. During the early years of their marriage, Art and Nancy lived in St. Bethlehem, TN while he served as a paratrooper in the United States Army's 101st Airborne. They then moved to New Brunswick, NJ, where Nancy began her distinguished career as an educator, followed by Williamstown, MA, and finally settled in the Princeton, NJ area.

Art was a born leader and coach. Following his honorable discharge as a Captain in the U.S. Army, where he had also become a tank commander, Art began his formal coaching career--first at Rutgers and then Williams College. At Williams, he was the varsity lacrosse coach and led them to a "Little Three" title. He then moved to Princeton University, where he was varsity lacrosse coach and a football coach, creating too many highlights and touching too many players for enumeration – he coached the "North-South" collegiate all-star lacrosse game, served on the NCAA Lacrosse rules committee and produced future leaders of business, education and the nation. After his coaching career, Art moved into the administration of Princeton University's athletic department, serving many years as the Associate Director of Athletics. After retiring from Princeton, Art devoted his tremendous talents and energy into fundraising for educational institutions (including The Lawrenceville School), non-profits and civic organizations for the country he loved so much. He created the Canon Group and assembled a team of experts to comprehensively manage all aspects of a capital campaign. From coaching to fundraising campaigns, thousands of lives were touched by his character, tenacity, class and wit.

Art always stayed very active, especially with his grandchildren. He even went back to coaching in recent years, joining the Cranford Lacrosse Club coaching staff for two of his grandson's teams. He was a fixture at hockey rinks, fields, plays, and school events, ever the supportive grandfather, father, teacher and all-around great person. Summers and early fall have been spent in Maine at the lakefront home he and his wife created and loved dearly – swimming, canoeing, kayaking, playing cards and other games with family and friends that came to stay.

Family was first, last and always the most important thing in his life. His family and friends will carry his legacy on as best they can.

Art was predeceased by his beloved Nancy, wife of 51 years. He is survived by his sons, Arthur E. Robinson III of East Hampton, CT, Michael E. Robinson of Wellesley, MA, and David W. Robinson of Cranford, NJ; his daughters-in-law Maria, Frances and Amy; his grandchildren Emily, Grace, Hannah, Kate, Iv, Will, Tyler, Christian and Luke; and his brother and great friend Joe Robinson of Danbury, CT.

A viewing will be held from 5:30-8:30 pm on Friday, August 19th, at Kimble Funeral Home, Princeton, NJ. A funeral service celebrating Art's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 20th, at Dutch Neck Church, West Windsor, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in the memory of "Arthur E. Robinson" to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation, 120 Albany Street, Suite 305, New Brunswick, NJ 08901. It was the work of Dr. Rodriguez and Dr. Gibbon at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey that drove his wife's cancer into remission and gave him additional years (rather than months) with his beloved wife. That was a gift he always cherished.
