Ann C. McCullough died peacefully in her home in Princeton, New Jersey on March 13, 2010 at the age of 84. She is remembered as a warm and gracious person with a heartfelt smile who brightened the lives of those around her.
She was born Mary Ann Calvert on June 19, 1925 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her father, George Calvert, was a child when his family came to Guthrie during the 1989 Land Run. Her mother, Maude Richman Calvert, received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in a discipline she helped establish, home economics, and received many honors for her life-long advocacy of child and maternal nutrition, handicapped children, and prisoner's rights.
With her younger sisters Betty Lou and Maude, Ann's childhood home was on a street bustling with aunts, uncles, and cousins, and her house was always filled with relatives during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. She attended the University of Oklahoma, where she majored in psychology, belonged to Chi Omega, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While there, she met a dashing young sailor in the Navy V-12 program, John P. McCullough.
Ann and John began their 60-year marriage in 1946. They moved to Corvallis, Oregon, where John earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Oregon State and Ann worked in the library and counseled servicemen returning from the war on educational and career decisions. The couple moved to Bartlesville, OK in 1949, where they raised three children. The family moved to New Jersey in 1963, living in Elm Ridge Park outside Princeton and then Haddonfield before settling in Princeton in 1972. Ann and John supported many local cultural and social organizations, including the Princeton University Art Museum, McCarter Theater, the New York City Ballet, the Stonybrook Watershed Association, the Nassau Presbyterian Church's music program, and the Trenton After School Program. Their interest in the arts and humanities inspired the couple's extensive travels.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, John McCullough, in 2006, Ann is survived by three daughters, Sherrill Davis and her husband Eugene of Haverford, PA, Cathryn Delude and her husband David of Andover, MA and Patricia McCullough of New York City; three grandchildren Philip Delude, Patricia Delude, and Michael Gene Davis and her sister, Betty Williams and her husband Art of Mesquite, TX.
A memorial service is planned for 11 am, Saturday June 26, 2010 at the Nassau Presbyterian Church in Princeton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau Street, Princeton, NJ 08542.
